"Refuse to kill. Refuse the order to go to war ... We know your resistance to war will be difficult and require great courage."
By Jonah House and Dorothy Day Catholic Worker. September 28, 2007
Brothers and sisters in the military: "Refuse to fight! Refuse to kill!"
You are being ordered to war in the footsteps of veterans, who, more than 10 years ago, were sent to fight the first Gulf War. Many of those vets returned with severe and unacknowledged illnesses. Many gave birth to severely deformed children. All were abandoned by the Veterans Administration.
You are being ordered to war by the most powerful nation on earth. ... (more)

Please Help Send A Stronger Message To Your Members Of Congress And Washington
-28 September 07 - 21:50
NOTE TO BLOG READERS: Please help send a stronger message to your members of Congress and to Washington, to "Support Our Troops, Bring Them Home". Please follow the below excerpt with instructions on how to do this. I have done this, it is easy to do and only takes a few minutes.
Message From MoveOn.
In the past week, Congress has voted down three separate proposals that would have supported our troops and helped end the war.1 But yesterday, the House did manage to join the Senate in condemning MoveOn.2
When the only thing our elected representatives can agree on is to silence war critics, it's time to get louder.
Congress may not be doing its job. But that means it's all the more important for the 3.3 million of us to do ours. We need to make it crystal clear that we will not stand down or relent until the war ends. ... (more)

76-22 and so it begins? Senate opens door to war with Iran
Article from AfterDowningStreet.org

Unfortunately, despite calls like the letter below and common sense, the US Senate today voted overwhelmingly to take a first clear step toward war with Iran. The Kyl-Lieberman Amendment is exactly as described in the letter from 25 organizations. 76 to 22. It wasn't even close!
What are we going to do about it?
Will the US attack Iran? Why not a sense of Congress vote against it? Why not a public outcry against the next horrendous, illegal, immoral, self-defeating war?
How can anyone vote for a Senate resolution seeking international doom? This story isn't covered at all. That's why the neocons feel (know? ... (more)

The Congressional Progressive Caucus has just released a press release and a statement that differs from the letter that so many citizens are working so hard to help the Progressive Caucus add congress members' signatures to (it's now at 83). The letter, addressed to Bush, says this:
"We are writing to inform you that we will only support appropriating additional funds for U.S. military operations in Iraq during Fiscal Year 2008 and beyond for the protection and safe redeployment of all our troops out of Iraq before you leave office..."

What Congressional Democrats Must Do This Week
As we all know, last week was horrendous for Senate Democrats. They couldn't pass the Dodd bill to restore Habeas Corpus, the Webb Amendment to rest our troops, or the Feingold-Reid Amendment to mostly leave Iraq by June 2008. And then 23 Democrats joined all the Republicans to outrageously attack Moveon for a completely factual newspaper ad.
Until now, we have asked you to write your Representatives about each important bill separately. But when Congress is this busy, there just isn't enough time for separate mailings.
So we're introducing a new strategy called the Democratic Weekly Agenda: (more)

We must separate “bad-mouthing our country” from justifiably criticizing and challenging the elected government. The Army is a tool of this government; Gen. Our Mission Goals For This Nation
-24 September 07 - 14:06
In reviewing some of the things that need worked on by the people of this nation, I have come to these conclusions. These are the things we have been working on and will work on in the future. In viewing the events of the past few days it is clear we need to work on our government to clear Blackwater out of Iraq, as illegal activity has been going on with this group and they have killed innocent Iraqis. Talk of weapons smuggling has been going on pertaining to this group. We must push hard to have them removed and held accountable, although they fall out of U.S. military and Iraqi military laws there must be something that the U.S. and Iraqi governments can do.
We must continue our efforts to press Congress not to go to war with Iran simply because the President and Vice-President say so. Proper investigations must be done first, they pose no IMMEDIATE threat, and going to war with Iran would be far more disastrous for everyone, including Iranian civilians, than ... (more)

OVERLAND PARK, Kansas (Reuters) - A Kansas military cemetery has run out of space after the burial of another casualty of the Iraq war, officials said on Thursday.
"We are full," said Alison Kohler, spokeswoman for the Fort Riley U.S. Army post, home of the 1st Infantry Division.
U.S. Sens. Sam Brownback and Pat Roberts, both Kansas Republicans, on Thursday sent a letter to William Tuerk, the under secretary for memorial affairs at the Department of Veterans Affairs, urging for full funding for a new cemetery for Fort Riley.
"While a new cemetery would not be completed in time to alleviate this situation immediately, it is vitally important," Roberts and Brownback, a Republican presidential candidate, said in their letter.
"We truly owe our military members a debt of gratitude and the least we can do is provide them with an honorable burial ground," the senators wrote. ... (more)

I believe I could have handled the situation without interruption, but again I do not know what warnings or other exchanges transpired between the young man and the police prior to his barging to the front of the line and their intervention.
I asked the police to allow me to answer the question and was in the process of answering him when he was taken into custody.
I was not aware that a taser was used until after I left the building. I hope that neither the student nor any of the police were injured.
I regret enormously that a good healthy discussion was interrupted.

Such failure represented an affront to the American people who rightly demanded that those within the Administration be held accountable for their mistakes, miscalculations, and misappropriations of power.
However, that time has come to an end. the 110th Congress will no longer fail the American people by abdicating its oversight responsibility. Ralph Nader Criticizes 'Spineless, Gutless' Democrats For Not Impeaching Bush

The onetime Green Party candidate appeared at an anti-war rally in Washington Saturday, where he chastised "spineless, gutless" Democrats in Congress for failing to boot Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney from office.
"The impeachable offenses of Bush outnumber any other list of impeachable offenses of any US president," Nader said. I hear they're macing people in DC - will try to get details. I just spoke at a great rally for impeachment in Miami, speech and video coming soon. And I'm very saddened to learn of the death of David Cline, leader of Veterans for Peace. We should all try to do as much as he did in his admirable life.
Report from Lori Perdue: Capitol police used pepper spray to try to deter people wanting to participate in the die-in as they went over the wall. Two unidentified males tried to go over the wall, and the police pushed them back with their riot shields. When they wouldn't get down, they sprayed the men, and the wind spread the spray all over the front of the crowd. I got hit by overspray, and so did Krissy Klein, 13-year-old daughter of Tina Richards. Also, Carlos Arredondo was jumped by eight members of the Gathering of Eagles. ... (more)
Sign Petition To Help Restore Habeas Corpus
-15 September 07 - 20:56
In just a few days, the Senate will vote on whether or not to restore habeas corpus -- the fundamental constitutional right that allows citizens to challenge the lawfulness of their imprisonment. President Bush currently has the power to declare anyone, including U.S. citizens, "enemy combatants" and throw them in jail indefinitely without any explanation for their imprisonment.
We urge you to contact your senators now and speak ... (more)

More than five years after war began in Iraq, veterans speak out against the occupation. By Amber Healy, The Connection
Being a good soldier means following the orders given by higher ranking officers, out of a sense of duty and loyalty to protect his country.
But what happens when a soldier feels his commanding officers, even the Commander in Chief, has betrayed and abandoned the Constitution?
Tony Teolis of Fairfax wrestled with that question for years before joining Veterans for Peace, one of many organizations that help veterans find the courage and the voice to speak out against the current occupation of Iraq.
"As veterans, we believe in the Constitution as the law of the land, and we took an oath to preserve, protect and ... (more)
Feingold Continues To Push For End Of Occupation In Iraq

From the office of Senator Russ Feingold
Feingold and Colleagues Will Offer Amendment Using Congress's "Power of the Purse"
Washington DC - U.S. Senator Russ Feingold announced today that he plans to continue his push in Congress for an end to the open-ended military mission in Iraq. Feingold intends to offer binding legislation that forces the President to redeploy U.S. troops from Iraq by using Congress's "power of the purse" when the Senate takes up the Defense authorization bill next week. Feingold is working with the Democratic leadership and his Senate colleagues to draft the legislation, which is expected to be similar to legislation he introduced earlier this year with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to redeploy U.S. troops from Iraq, after which funding for the ongoing military mission would end. This past May, a majority of Democratic senators voted in favor of the Feingold-Reid proposal. ... (more)

Two Of Seven Soldiers Who Wrote New York Times Op-Ed Die In Iraq
On Aug. 19, seven active duty soldiers of the 82nd Airborne Division wrote an op-ed in The New York Times called “The War As We Saw It.” The piece expressed skepticism about “recent press coverage portraying the conflict as increasingly manageable”:
The claim that we are increasingly in control of the battlefields in Iraq is an assessment arrived at through a flawed, American-centered framework. […]
In the end, we need to recognize that our presence may have released Iraqis from the grip of a tyrant, but that it has also robbed them of their self-respect. They will soon realize that the best way to regain dignity is to call us what we are — an army of occupation — and force our ... (more)

Bush's Troop Announcement, A Response From Rep. Dennis Kucinich
-14 September 07 - 00:49
WASHINGTON, D.C. (September 13, 2007) — Congressman Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) issued the following statement in anticipation of President Bush’s call for a troop withdrawal:
“Instead of a surge, now we have a stall. The President’s announcement is nothing but a fake withdrawal,” Kucinich said.
“The President wants to keep the troops in Iraq through the end of his term, with no end to this war in sight. This ‘withdrawal’ announcement is just another attempt to deceive the American people.
“President Bush is giving people a sense that the war is winding down when no such thing is happening. The President’s withdrawal plan of 30,000 troops by mid-2008, only takes us to the same level of troops that we were at a year ago—before the January surge. That’s not a withdrawal, it’s a stall.
“At a time when the American people are demanding a new direction in Iraq, Congress must take a stand and act responsibly to end this war. ... (more)
"Arrest Bush, Not Rev"
-14 September 07 - 00:22
By Cindy Sheehan
On the day of the General David (“ass kissing little chickenshit”---Adm Fallon, Commander of CENTCOM) Petraeus and Ambassador Ryan Crocker did their puppet show for Congress, my daughter, Carly, felt ill so we didn’t get a chance to get there early enough to obtain one of the tickets for the miserly 37 seats that were allocated for the public in the hearing room.
Most of the people in the front of the line were good friends of mine who had arrived at about 8am and were patiently waiting to get in. I greeted everyone (including Rev. Lennox Yearwood) and went to the back of the line…I did a few interviews while waiting for the hearing to begin. Capitol Police handed out 37 “tickets” and skipped some people who had been waiting in the line. One of them was the Rev, who had gotten out of line to do an interview and had cleared it with one of the officers because he didn’t want to lose his place in line. ... (more)

Week of Antiwar Events To Start With a 'Die-In' Protesters Advocate Civil Disobedience
By Michelle Boorstein and Allison Klein Washington Post Staff Writers Thursday, September 13, 2007
A week of events meant to crank up a national demonstration against the war in Iraq is set to begin Saturday, with a 1,000-person "die-in" at the U.S. Capitol led by current and former American troops and accompanied by taps and a mock 21-gun salute.
The die-in will be the culmination of a march and rally. Organizers hope the event will spur people in the antiwar movement to move from protesting to performing acts of civil disobedience that "get in the way of the war machine," said Brian Becker, national coordinator of the ANSWER Coalition, at a news ... Lincoln, An Actual Person, He Never Was A Real Politician
-13 September 07 - 03:18
To me, Lincoln was one of the best. He grew up dirt poor, only having about 18 months of education but teaching himself through reading many books. He also couldn't afford law school, and so,mostly taught himself law. He had little education and was very poor in his younger years and yet, later became President of the United States. He has always been an amazing man to study. Seemed to be more like one of us than one of "THEM" if you get my meaning. The Civil War was a necessary war, it helped to grant the freedom to many slaves who lived in this country and who had the same feelings as you and I, but were treated like they were nothing, amounted to nothing and never would be worth anything. Lincoln is a man to whom his opinion matters more over that of any in the government of today who make their livings on decieving the majority of the American people, voting on what matters most to them and protecting their own reputations ahead of doing what is ... Hebron, CT Democrats seek Bush and Cheney Impeachment
-11 September 07 - 16:50
By Russell Vermilyea | Journal Inquirer
HEBRON - The Democratic Town Committee is seeking to have President Bush and Vice President Cheney impeached, and has called on a Democratic Connecticut congressman to take action.
The Democrats during an Aug. 21 meeting backed a resolution to impeach the president and the vice president.
The resolution cited 12 "crimes," among them: violation of the oath of office to protect and defend the U.S. Constitution, lying about the need for military action in Iraq, allowing torture of prisoners, and violation of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act by conducting "warrantless" eavesdropping.
It says any of the 12 would be "sufficient in and of itself to warrant impeachment proceedings."
Hebron Democrat Gil Salk, who wrote the impeachment resolution, said Wednesday that by voice ... (more)
Support Rev. Lennox Yearwood Jr.
-11 September 07 - 16:20
Support is needed for Rev. Lennox Yearwood, Jr. Please show your solidarity by coming to his arraignment today. He has been held overnight in jail and will be arraigned today at 1:00 p.m. in DC Superior Court ( 500 Indiana Ave. ). This is near the Judiciary Square Metro Stop. Directions. As you can see from the videos, Rev. Yearwood did not assault the police or even resist them. We hear he is being charged with a felony. This is often done when police overreact and use unnecessary force in order to justify their actions. This is a serious charge. The peace community needs to come out and show our support for this important spokesperson for our cause.

Protestors Arrested While Petraeus Was Giving Iraq Report
-11 September 07 - 16:06
According to The Raw Story, at least 7 protestors, including Cindy Sheehan, had been arrested yesterday and chased out of the room where Petraeus and Crocker were giving the Iraq report to Congress. Here is what some of them had to say. A few members from the Code Pink organization was also there. One woman from Code Pink shouted in the room, "I have a right to speak out! This is not Russia!" Here is what some of the protestors had to say about Petraeus yesterday:
Co-founder of Code Pink said Petraeus was "nothing but a messenger for the White House." She also said, "We've had the wool pulled over our eyes right from the start of this war. We're sick of the lies and want our troops home."
Geoff Millard, a 26 yr. old former sergeant with the army's 42nd Infantry Division who served in Iraq in 2004 and 2005 said, "Westmoreland came to Congress and said we need more troops and more time. ... (more)
